One of the questions we get asked most is simple: when’s the best time to visit? The honest answer is that Sebastopol and the surrounding Wine Country are good nearly year-round — but each season here has a distinct personality, and knowing what you’re walking into makes for a much better trip.
Spring (March–May) is when Sonoma County turns green and a little wild. The hills around town are covered in wildflowers, the Russian River is still running high enough for a scenic drive along it, and local farms start opening up for the season. It’s shoulder season for tourism, which means better rates and easier restaurant reservations, even at busy spots like Handline or Fern Bar. Pack a layer — spring mornings here start cool and foggy before burning off by midday.
Summer (June–August) is peak season, and for good reason. The days are long, warm, and dry, perfect for the Joe Rodota Trail, a day trip out to Bodega Bay, or an evening at the Peacetown Summer Concert Series in Ives Park every Wednesday. The Barlow’s outdoor seating is at its best now, and every brewery patio in town is full of people making the most of it. Book early — this is when our properties fill up fastest.
Fall (September–November) might be our favorite. This is harvest season across Wine Country, and the crowds thin out just as the light gets golden and the oak-lined trails turn color. It’s an ideal time for wine tasting without the summer lines, and the weather is often warm during the day and crisp at night — perfect deck-sitting weather back at the house.
Winter (December–February) is quiet, rainy, and cozy in the best way. Fewer tourists means you’ll have places like Wild Flour Bread and The Barlow almost to yourselves on a weekday. It’s also when a rainy-day plan comes in handy — a slow morning at the house, a stop at Whole Foods for groceries, and an evening at one of the Barlow’s indoor tasting rooms covers a full day nicely.
