Joe Rodota Trail

The Joe Rodota Trail is the easiest way to stretch your legs without a plan. It’s a flat, paved 8.5-mile path that runs from downtown Sebastopol out toward Santa Rosa along an old rail corridor, so there’s no climbing involved — just an easy walk, run, or bike ride through oak groves, open fields, and a bit of wetland. You don’t need to commit to the whole thing; the Sebastopol end near Petaluma Avenue is a good spot to park and walk out twenty minutes before turning back, or rent bikes and make a real afternoon of it. Morning is the best time to go, especially in fall when the oaks turn gold and the light comes through the canopy just right. It’s popular with locals walking dogs and commuting cyclists, so it never feels empty, but it’s rarely crowded either. There’s parking at the west end of Sebastopol Road and additional access points along the way. Bring water if you’re doing more than a mile or two — there’s not much shade once you’re past the first stretch.
