Sebastopol gets you the redwoods and vineyards; Bodega Bay gets you the ocean, and it’s close enough to do as an easy half-day trip. The drive out along Bodega Highway is worth it on its own — rolling farmland gives way to the coast fairly suddenly, and the town itself is a working fishing harbor with just enough charm to make wandering the docks worthwhile. Come for the dramatic bluffs and tide pools at Bodega Head, stay for fresh seafood at one of the harbor-side spots, and time your visit for late afternoon if you want to catch the old fishing sheds and boats lit up gold at sunset. It’s also the filming location for Hitchcock’s The Birds, if that’s the kind of trivia that makes a stop more interesting. Weekends bring more visitors and slower parking near the main harbor, so a weekday trip is easier if your schedule allows it. Pack a layer no matter the season — coastal fog and wind roll in fast, even on days that start warm inland in Sebastopol.
